Early life and Education

Alakh Pandey’s early life was full of struggles and hardships, but the worst came when his father had to sell half of the house and later the entire house, and it forced him to live in a slum area. Understanding the urgency of the situation at a very young age, he started giving

 tuition to 5th grade kids from 9th grade itself.
And by the time he reached 11th grade, he started studying at a local coaching institute. Till this time, he had no idea that his compulsion would become the foundation of his success. Despite being a teacher, he did not get some extraordinary grades during his school days.

Alakh completed his early schooling from Bishop Johnson School and later joined Inhon Harcourt Butler Technical Institute (HBTI), Kanpur (2011-2014) for mechanical engineering. But he dropped out of college in the final year due to the unconventional teaching methods of the teachers.

In college, he also tried acting and used to play a role in a Nukkad drama. After dropping out, he started tutoring in a coaching institute in Allahabad and unknowingly kept building the foundation of his journey.

Alakh Pandey Sir’s teaching journey starts in 2016 from a Youtube channel with a marker, a whiteboard, and a mobile phone. He named his YouTube channel “Physics Wallah, where he initially used to provide free videos of physics and chemistry for medical and technical entrance exams like JEE and NEET.
Due to his teaching style, humour, and conceptual understanding, he soon gained attention among the students and gradually became one of the most loved physics teachers on whole YouTube in the Neet and Jee segment.

Another big turning point in his journey comes when he launched the Physics Wallah application along with the partnership of Prateek Maheswari in 2020 for providing quality education with less distraction for students. While launching his application, he ensured that the prices of batches and courses are kept affordable so that the poor students also become able to pursue their education without feeling money as a barrier in their pathway. 

In his PW app, he first came up with Yakeen and Lakshya batches for dropper and 12th grade students, respectively, at an affordable fee of 900 rupees. There he used to provide a mix of recorded and live lectures along with practice tutorials, which was successful in gathering a wide range of students.

Along with this, the quality and affordability of the platform became a major reason for its rapid growth. And by August 2022, Physics Wallah had achieved unicorn status under the leadership of founder Alakh Sir, and their sales momentum constantly kept going upward.

In September 2024, the company raised $210 million in a Series B funding round from Hornbill Capital, whose rating is $2.8 crore. This fund may be to enhance the visibility and explore their capabilities. Also, due to the promising and innovative mindset of Alakh Sir, he has got a place in the most prestigious Hurun List of top young entrepreneurs under 35 years of age in 2024. Alakh Sir provides all the credits of his success to his mother and sister, who supported him in all his decisions and made him reach the wonderful place where he is currently standing. Alakh has dated many girls irrespective of their caste and religion and finally met his future wife Shivani during completing some official work where he continued the relationship. Recently, he secretly got married to his girlfriend Shivani Dubey on 22 March 2023, who is a freelance journalist and a chemistry educator, but after marrying, he arranged a grand party for his reception where he invited many star teachers of both the online and offline worlds. 

Prominent controversies  

Alakh Pandey has been involved in several controversies, including the one that started in the very early life of physics wallah in 2020. The controversy was associated with the main biology faculty of Neet segment “Tina Mam,” who jumped out of Physics Wallah and joined Unacedmy due to a high income offer. That was a very heartbreaking moment for Physics Wallah, as it was in its initial phase of growth.

Another one came with Aman Dhattarwal’s platform “Apni Kaksha” in late 2022. The controversy arose due to the allegation levelled by Aman Dhattarwal against Alakh Pandey that he manipulated his eminent tutors and creators by luring them with high salaries and became an obstacle in providing affordable education. Due to this allegation on Physics Wallah, the people started raising questions about fair competition in the education industry.

After this, a controversy again surfaced in early 2023 in which PW’s prominent educators Manish Dubey, Tarun Kumar, and Sarvesh Dixit suddenly resigned and launched a new platform, “Sankalp.” They said that PW is misleading its courses and batches and deviating from its main goal of providing affordable education. PW backfired with his response on this matter, stating that those three teachers took bribes of around 5 crores from the rival platform Adda 247 to spread such misinformation.

In 2024, he came to face an allegation of misinformation from NTA as Alakh Pandey stood strongly with the students in the NEET paper leak scandal. And since then, he has become a true influencer for the students.
