Samay Raina was born on October 26th, 1997, in Jammu and Kashmir in a conservative middle-class Kashmiri Pandit family. His passion for entertainment and games made him open his first YouTube channel in 2013, where he started posting comedy videos and live streams of popular games.  

He always regretted his decision to join his engineering college, PVG’s COET in Pune. This regression made him start performing open mic events where he tried playing guitar, stand-up comedy, and poetry. Initially, he got retarted by his parents for not following his study, but after his continuous requests, they allowed him for his comedy career. 

Samay Raina’s Comedy Career 

Samay’s shows soon started getting the attention of the audience, and he soon became a popular and regular stand-up comedian in Pune. Till 2017, he had grown a good comedy fanbase. By 2017, he began opening for well-renowned comedians like Anirban Dasgupta and Abhishek Upmanyu in Pune.

To grow his stand-up comedy career, Samay shifted from Pune to Mumbai. After that, he performed in several successful shows in Mumbai and several cities of India, as well as in foreign countries. In 2019, he participated in the 2nd season of the Indian stand-up comedy competition named “Comicstaan” as per suggestions of Akash Gupta, where Samay and Akash became the joint winners. This series aired on Amazon Prime Video.

When COVID-19 hit India, leading to lockdown, Samay found himself unable to host any comedy shows due to restrictions. So, he decided to start streaming chess on his YouTube channel as per his friend Tanmay Bhat’s suggestion.

It was the beginning of Samay’s chess career, where he decided to bring together professional chess players to enjoy and play with other stand-up comedians. The chess event was hosted online and named “Chess for Charity,” and all the money they collected was donated to the people residing below the poverty line.

The event got wider attention due to the participation of popular influencers like Viswanathan Anand, Yuzi Chahal, Vidit Gujrathi, Abhishek Upamanyu, Biswa Kalyan Rath, etc. They got so much popularity due to the event and successfully raised Rs 8.86 lakh for the wastepicker community.

Samay Raina didn’t stop here. In the same year, he organised numerous online chess tournaments on his Youtube channel called Comedians on Board to attract a larger audience. In these chess events, he used to invite his comedian friends and other influencers to make the event more interesting. He continued the Comedians On Board Chess events from 2020 to 2022 and was the winner of 4th and 5th tournaments.

He again organised a chess event titled “Chess Super League” by partnering with ChessBase India and Nodwin Gaming. The league met the participation of some of the top international and Indian grandmasters, along with Indian junior players. The tournament was successfully hosted with 6 teams for a prize pool of Rs 40 lakhs and got so much support from the audience. Also, the whole event was streamed on Samay’s YouTube channel.

Again in 2021, Samay participated in a chess tournament named “Botez Bullet Invitational,” hosted by the Botez sisters. The tournament was a one-hour bullet arena in which Samay was successful in winning a handsome amount of $4000. The tournament was sponsored by Chess.com, and Samay was the only Indian streamer known to participate in that tournament.

By 2022, Samay had gathered a nice rating of 1600 at rapid chess on chess.com, while his highest rating record was 1942.

Samay’s Comedy Career post Lockdown

When lockdown ended and restrictions were removed for public gatherings. Samay again started his passion. In 2021, he was cast on Hindi Netflix in a show “reality meets stand-up meets variety.”. The series was titled Comedy Premier League, and Samay was part of the team named “Lovable Longoors,” which has the involvement of some other members like Amit Tandon, Aadar Malik, and Rytasha Rathore.

Again in 2021, Samay participated in season 2 of the Indian standup comedy television show titled “One Mic Stand,” which was made public on Amazon Prime Video. In this show, Samay was highlighted as a guest comedian in episode 5 of the 2nd season, featuring the Indian rapper Raftaar.
